Overrated Sushi on Fifth

Overrated Sushi on Fifth
Omakase FifthManhattan, NY

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. We’d been hearing about this place for months — every food account, every “you HAVE to try” recommendation from friends. So we booked two months in advance and showed up ready to be impressed.

First Impressions

Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris. The space is beautiful, no question. Minimalist, clean, with a long hinoki counter and the chef working right in front of you. The atmosphere does a lot of heavy lifting here.

The counter

Duis aute irure dolor in reprehenderit in voluptate velit esse cillum dolore eu fugiat nulla pariatur. We were handed a hot towel and a menu that was really just a list of what was coming. Fourteen courses. No choices to make.

The Omakase

First courses

Duis aute irure dolor in reprehenderit in voluptate velit esse cillum dolore eu fugiat nulla pariatur. Course after course arrived — each one pristine, each one technically excellent. The toro was silky, the uni was sweet, the tamago was pillowy. And yet, by course eight, we found ourselves thinking: is this really that different from places charging half the price?

The toro

Excepteur sint occaecat cupidatat non proident, sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt mollit anim id est laborum. Maybe our expectations were too high. Maybe the hype poisoned the experience. But at $300 per person before drinks, we left feeling like we’d paid for the scene more than the food.

The bill

The Verdict

Good sushi. Not life-changing sushi. We know a place on a side street that does it nearly as well for a quarter of the price. That’s where we’ll be going next time.
