On Eating Alone

On Eating Alone

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. The first time you eat alone at a restaurant — a real sit-down restaurant, not a counter or a fast-casual place — it feels like everyone is watching. They’re not, of course. But it feels that way.

The Awkward Part

Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris nisi ut aliquip ex ea commodo consequat. You sit down. You look at the menu. You look at your phone. You look at the menu again. The waiter asks if you’re waiting for someone and you say “no, just me” with a confidence you don’t quite feel.

An empty table

Duis aute irure dolor in reprehenderit in voluptate velit esse cillum dolore eu fugiat nulla pariatur. But then the food arrives, and something shifts. There’s no conversation to split your attention. No “how’s yours?” No negotiating over shared plates. It’s just you and the food.

The meal arrives

The Good Part

Excepteur sint occaecat cupidatat non proident, sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt mollit anim id est laborum. You notice things. The texture of the bread. The way the sauce pools on one side of the plate. The sounds of the kitchen. You eat slower. You taste more.

Details on the plate

Sed ut perspiciatis unde omnis iste natus error sit voluptatem accusantium doloremque laudantium. There’s a selfishness to it that feels earned. You ordered exactly what you wanted. You’re eating at exactly the pace you want. Nobody is rushing you, and you’re not rushing anyone.

Try It

Totam rem aperiam, eaque ipsa quae ab illo inventore veritatis. Next time you have an evening free, pick a place you’ve been meaning to try. Go alone. Bring a book if you need a safety blanket, but you probably won’t open it.
